Innovative approaches in scaling up community resilience

In collaboration with the Red Cross and the World Bank, Wetlands International will organize a workshop (lab session) at the European Development Days on 3-4 June 2015. In this session, Wetlands International with humanitarian partners will present innovations and partnerships in disaster risk reduction that work in a holistic way and show how the humanitarian and development gap is being bridged to strengthen community resilience at the appropriate scale. Deadline for registration: 25 May 2015

The Government of Indonesia, UNU-EHS and
UNEP co-organize training course in Jakarta

The Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries of the Republic of Indonesia,
together with the United Nations University Institute of Environment and Human Security (UNU-EHS), EcoShape Consortium and UNEP, organized a national training from 11-13 May 2015, geared towards the Ministry's technical and planning officers. The training highlighted the importance of ecosystems for disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation and applying Eco-DRR/CCA approaches for coastal protection. With the country facing increasing risk of coastal erosion, tsunamis and storm surges, the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries is focusing on Eco-DRR/CCA measures to mitigate coastal disasters. Green climate fund scholarship pilot program
The United Nations Green Climate Fund has helped developing countries and Small Islands States to mitigate climate change effects, by giving grants and loans. It now seeks to help students from these countries to obtain scholarships and take undergraduate and graduate courses related to climate change in universities of donor countries. The Green Climate Fund Scholarship Pilot Program is based upon the premise that a small percentage of each Developed Country's pledge to the Green Climate Fund should be used to fund relevant climate change related scholarships for students from developing countries and Small Island States. More information.

Coasts at risk in Haiti
In celebration of the International Day for Biological Diversity on 22 May 2015, the United Nations Development Programme and the Government of Haiti have launched a project that seeks to improve the country's resilience to climate change. The project includes planting of mangroves in order to cope with sea-level rise, reduce coastal erosion and enhance protection against coastal storms. The project intends to highlight the importance of marine and coastal biodiversity in Haiti, which is considered the 6th country in the world most vulnerable to climate change. More information
Space-based and geographical information to assess health of ecosystems
Space-based and geographic information can be useful tools for Eco-DRR. They can analyze the robustness of ecosystems and their capacity to buffer against hazards. Space-based information not only provides information on the extent of ecosystems, but also gives insight into their dynamics and functions, when analyzed in conjunction with field-based information. Data could be used for planning actions to protect and regenerate ecosystems, which contribute to disaster-resilient societies and sustainable development. Read full article.

The impact of climate change on the achievement of the Post-2015 sustainable development goals
Published by CDKN, HR Wallingford and Metroeconomica, this publication explores the implications of a potential international climate agreement on achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030. At the global level, a highly ambitious climate agreement will strongly support implementation and effectiveness of the SDGs. However, at the country-level, the nature of the linkages between the climate agreement and the achievement of SDGs is shown to vary from country to country.  Read full publication.

Webinar: Developing information and tools for ecosystem services assessments

The Sub-Global Assessment Network is hosting a webinar on developing information and tools for ecosystem services assessment presented by Simone Meynard (Australian National University). The webinar aims to give information and recommendations on how to establish a framework for ecosystem services assessment. Ecosystems provide multiple services, including buffers against disasters. Economic valuation of ecosystem services would strengthen advocacy for their conservation, rehabilitation and sustainable use and management. More information.
