 PEDRR Shoutout - Eco-DRR in Geneva for flood management
The city of Geneva (Switzerland) has recently faced
high risks of flooding after heavy rains raised the threshold of the River Arve along the French-Swiss border. Fortunately, forward planning with a focus on flood risk management and prevention has been in place for several years, with an emphasis on natural solutions to flood risk reduction. Instead of building walls and further channeling of the river, Geneva's government has restored marshlands and given more space to streams in order for excess water to be absorbed. On the French side, similar projects have been implemented. In 16 years, the city of Geneva invested US$ 75 million and the French government invested US$ 168 million over two decades. The focus on risk reduction is now paying off, avoiding significant flood damage in the Geneva metropolitan area. Read more.

Ecosystem Based Adaptation: Knowledge gaps in making an economic case for investing in nature based solutions for climate change

Published by IUCN in collaboration with the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Development, this publication makes an economic case for Ecosystem-based Adaptation based on analyses of several case studies from Costa Rica, India, Mexico, Peru, the Philippines and Tanzania. Findings from the cost-benefit analyses established that EbA increases resilience and lowers vulnerability to climate change. However, the study also highlights the lack of knowledge and robust economic valuation studies for EbA, as current analyses are mostly country-specific and qualitative. Read full publication.

Compendium of case studies on climate and disaster resilient development in the Pacific
|

This publication by the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) with the support of the EU, UNISDR, UNDP and other organizations, presents 40 case studies on how pacific islands communities cope with climate change and disasters. Many of these communities rely on ecosystems for their livelihoods; therefore, sustainable ecosystem management approaches offer important solutions for communities to build resilience to disasters and climate change. Coastal risk: Time to act is now
This blog calls attention to a new US federal study that favours a combination of natural and engineered infrastructure for reducing coastal risks. Built infrastructure such as seawalls, levees and culverts, has dominated thinking about coastal protection in the past. But increasing evidence shows that healthy ecosystems and habitats such as wetlands, dunes, barrier islands, coral and oyster reefs, reduce the risk of coastal flooding while providing other social and economic benefits. The blog highlights opportunities for redesigning shorelines that include a combination of natural and built infrastructure, known as "hybrid infrastructure", citing the unprecedented high-level attention currently found in the US federal and state governments in favour of using natural and hybrid solutions to reduce coastal vulnerability to disasters. Courses include community-based adaptation to climate change by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) or an introduction to Geographic Information System (GIS) which is an important tool often used to assess disasters risks.
