PEDRR NEWS: Powerful earthquake hits Nepal

On 25 April, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck the central region of Nepal, between the cities of Pokhara and Kathmandu, with continuing aftershocks including one that reached 6.7 magnitude. The death roll has risen to over 3 500, but is expected to increase  as search and rescue continue in affected districts, with thousands more injured from the powerful earthquake. PEDRR extends our condolescences to all those who have lost loved ones and our thoughts for the continued safety of all those affected. IUCN Nepal and UNEP were undertaking a joint workshop together with the Government of Nepal on "Ecosystems for Enhancing Resilience to Disasters and Climate Risk" from 20-24 April in Kathmandu and in Pokhara. The workshop focused on mainstreaming ecosystem-based solutions to disasters and climate change impacts in Nepal, including the need for increasing safety of roads against landslides and gulley erosion through "green" engineering approaches, also known as "eco-safe roads".

IUCN bio-engineering booklet on eco-safe roadsides

At the recent national workshop on "Ecosystems enhancing resilience to disasters and climate risk" held on 20-24 April 2015 in Nepal, IUCN announced the release of a publication on Community-based bio-engineering for eco-safe roadsides in Nepal, developed jointly with the Government of Nepal and the University of Lausanne (Switzerland). Rural roads, which are an essential part of communities' livelihoods but are often poorly-designed and constructed, have resulted in significant erosion and landslides, which in turn damage homes, crops and other vital community assets. "Eco-safe" roads use bio-engineering techniques that help reduce environmental degradation and disaster risk. Read full publication here

Climate-resilient development: A framework for understanding and addressing climate change

This report from the United States Agency for International Development aims to guide decision-makers regarding climate change actions. More specifically, it seeks to assist practitioners to evaluate actions that will reduce climate vulnerabilities and enhance sustainable development.  Indonesia's mangroves are a treasure worth saving

This commentary points out the importance of mangroves  as they provide multiple services, including carbon storage and as natural coastal buffers to tropical cyclones. Unfortunately, mangroves are being lost world-wide at an alarming rate of up to 15 million hectares in 2005. Indonesia, in particular, has lost one third of its mangroves between 1980 and 2010, because of conversion to agriculture, tourism or urban development. Having recognized the benefits of mangroves, the Indonesian Ministry of Fisheries is now pushing for mangroves restoration. Read more here.
