Newsletter on ecosystems-based risk reduction and climate change adaptation

PEDRR Shoutout -  Protected areas as tools for disaster risk reduction

The role of ecosystems in providing affordable and reliable natural infrastructure that serve as protective barriers against disasters has been increasingly recognized. Protected areas offer well-established tools which could facilitate disaster risk reduction. This IUCN handbook for practitioners aims to provide practical guidance on the effective use of protected areas as a tool for DRR. More information.

UNFCCC database on local coping strategies

This database intends to facilitate the transfer of coping strategies, mechanisms, knowledge and experience from communities that have learned to adapt to specific hazards or climate conditions. Literature can be searched by hazards, impacts, strategy or region. The database includes projects on natural resource management in the context of disaster management. More information.
Video of the week

First aired in the Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) on "Disasters and Ecosystems: Resilience in Changing Climate", UN Special Representative for Disaster Risk Reduction Margareta Wahlström shares some successful DRR stories she has witnessed and explains why DRR is often not prioritized. Urban risk reduction: developing and implementing resilience action plans for cities

A new online course  focusing on resilience in cities was last week lauched by UNISDR and the UN Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR). Piloted in 13 countries, the training aims to strenghten governments' capacities to cope with disasters and enhance urban resilience. Comprised of seven modules focusing on DRR, there is one specific module on mainstreaming DRR into sectoral programmes, including ecosystems and environment. Read article.
Launch of Drought-Net Research

Droughts are known to impact terrestrial ecosystems, but there is a knowledge gap. Improved understanding is needed of the mechanisms underlying different ecosystems' vulnerability to droughts. Traditional site-based approaches cannot provide this knowledge, because site-specific experiments are conducted in a way that makes comparisons difficult. This recently-established research network works on advancing the understanding of ecosystems' sensitivity to droughts. Read more.
