Building with Nature programme
in Indonesia wins Dutch engineering award
Consortium and the Government of Indonesia, the “Building with nature” programme in Northern Java has won the annual award for innovative engineering solutions in the Netherlands. Semi-permeable dams made out of locally-available materials are constructed along the coast, which in turn functions as a natural breakwater to reduce coastal flooding and erosion and to regenerate eroded mangroves. Over time, mangroves should take over the role of dams and keep sediments in place. Because of the dams’ simple design, local communities are able to build them. The Ecoshape Consortium is coordinated by Wetlands International.
