PEDRR Shoutout : Nature-based solutions can help solve global challenges.
 
In partnership with the World Commission on Protected Areas (WCPA), the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) produced an in-depth report on ecosystem-based solutions to tackle global societal challenges, including reducing disaster risk. The report outlines IUCN’s position on nature-based solutions and lays out future work to advance the concept towards effective programme implementation. Access the full report here.

Coastal wetlands save hundreds of millions of dollars in the US
A study by the Nature Conservancy, entitled “Coastal Wetlands and Flood Damage Reduction”, has quantified the economic benefits of protecting natural habitats during hurricanes in the United States. Understanding the economic value of natural defenses helps to integrate ecological solutions in risk models and coastal management systems. Click here for details.

The power of maps: Bringing the third dimension to the negotiating table
Produced by the Partnership for Agriculture and Rural Cooperation (CTA), the study focuses on the benefits of Participatory 3D Modeling (P3DM) in bringing together local spatial, natural resource and geographic information systems for sustainable development decision-making, presenting a wide range of case studies from around the world. Follow the link. P3DM was used in Eco-DRR projects being implemented by UN Environment and partners in Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Access DRC report here.

Ecosystem-based adaptation of African mountain ecosystems

 
The book volume Climate change adaptation: An upstream and downstream perspective was launched at the Third World Mountain Forum in Mbale, Uganda, last week. The book features a chapter on ecosystem-based adaptation approaches being implemented by the UN Environment, UN Development Programme, IUCN and local partners in the mountainous region of Elgon, Uganda, for reducing community vulnerability to disasters.
     
  
Training
Free online training course on sustainable development in Latin America 
 
The Inter American-Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) is launching a new, free online course (MOOC) on the impact of climate change in Latin America. The course is for Spanish speakers and will be launched during the Conference of Parties-22 (COP 22) on 07-18 November in Marrakesh, Morocco. The project was developed in collaboration with the UN Secretariat for the Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). Webinar series for improved approaches to flood and drought management
This new interactive webinar session features emerging tools for innovative approaches for flood and drought management. Organized by the UN Environment and the Institute for Water and Environment (DHI), the session focuses on closing down the target gap on Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 6: Water and Sanitation, which gives explicit mention to disaster reduction. The session will feature national-level drought management approaches, with presenters from the World Metrological Organization. For more information, please follow the link.
