 PEDRR International workshop
"Innovating Engineering and Ecosystem-based Approaches for Disaster Risk Reduction"
PEDRR held a workshop at the United Nations University in Bonn, Germany from 14-16 June 2016, which brought over 50 practitioners, academics, policy makers and engineers together. The goal of the workshop was to contribute to accelerating and scaling up implementation of ecosystem-based approaches to disaster risk reduction in the engineering and planning community. Workshop participants brainstormed on a number of innovative and concrete next steps, including a special publication, a policy brief, establishing the “10 Golden Rules of ecological engineering for Eco-DRR", documenting case studies on multiple benefits of Eco-DRR, creating an inventory of Eco-DRR projects and a how-to-guide for establishing an ecological engineering project. GEF and UNDP's Project to build resilience in the mountain ecosystems for climate change adaptation in Armenia
|

Armenia, a mountainous landlocked nation in southwest Asia, is vulnerable to severe forest fires. The pressures of climate change – rising temperatures, drought, and outbreaks of pests – are worsening the problem. In response, the GEF and UNDP supported a project in the species-rich forests of the Syunik region as a testbed to improve forest management in Armenia.The project, which ran from 2009 to 2013, improved forest health, forest fire management on over 100,000 hectares, these activities reduced the vulnerability of targeted forest ecosystems to climate change and improved the resilience of local livelihoods. The government has succeeded in mainstreaming policies related to climate change risks and adaptation in the environmental management framework of Armenia. Read More or see the featured book below. |

Cascades of green: A review of ecosystem-based adaptation in urban areas
|
|
Conventional, “hard” adaptation measures are often associated with high costs, inflexibility and conflicting interests related to the dense urban fabric. Ecosystem-based adaptation (EbA) has emerged as a potentially cost-efficient, comprehensive, and multi-functional approach. EbA research takes a problem-focused, rather than a traditional disciplinary approach and in doing so draws upon multiple academic fields and concepts, including ecology, nature conservation, development, risk management, ecosystem services and climate change adaptation. In this literature review, EbA approaches in 112 cities were analysed using statistical and qualitative methods. The study highlighted key trends and challenges for future EbA research. Read more |

Action Plan on the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030: A disaster-risk-informed approach for all EU policies

The European Commission has published a working document of the Action Plan on the Sendai Framework, where ecosystem-based approaches are discussed. Under Key Area 2: “An all-of-society approach in disaster risk management”, one of the priorities for the EU will be to strengthen the links between disaster risk management, climate change adaptation and biodiversity strategies and under Key Area 3: “Promoting EU risk informed investments” will aim to foster and implement ecosystem-based approaches to disaster risk reduction. Training Course on Climate Change Adaptation in a Changing Environment

The training course provided by Indepth Research Services (IRES) will take place 8-12 August in Nairobi, Kenya. Climate change impacts will affect social and ecological systems in complex and broad-ranging ways as technological, economic, social and ecological changes take place.This training places local sustainability, its development challenges and local vulnerabilities in the context of climate change at regional and global levels in order to understand their linkages. The Portuguese National Strategy for Integrated Coastal Zone Management as a spatial planning instrument to climate change adaptation in the Minho River Estuary

Climate Change is one of the greatest threats to coastal zones. Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM), which considers the interaction between socioeconomic activities and environmental requirements to natural resources use in coastal zones, is a great tool to include climate change adaptation (CCA) measures, particularly directed to the most vulnerable areas such as estuaries, thus constituting a key component of spatial planning. The aim of the study is to examine how the integration of ICZM and CCA can improve the management of the potential climate change impacts at local level, in the Minho River Estuary.
