Vietnam: Building Climate Resilience and Ensuring Sustainable Livelihoods of Farmers in the Mekong Delta
The World Bank’s Board of Executive Directors approved $310 million to help Vietnam build climate resilience and ensure sustainable livelihoods of 1.2 million people living in nine Mekong Delta provinces affected by climate change, salinity intrusion, coastal erosion, and flooding. The approved Mekong Delta Integrated Climate Resilience and Sustainable Livelihoods Project supports better climate-smart planning and improved climate resilience of land and water management practices, including ecosystem-based approaches. A series of ambitious environmental policies that invest in natural capital are improving services provided by China’s ecosystems, such as flood control and sand storm mitigation, according to research conducted by an international team of scientists. Officials in China began considering significant environmental reform following a series of natural disasters in the late 1990s that were exacerbated by human activities. Read the Article.

Between 2013 and 2016, UNEP and the European Commission supported a pilot demonstration project on Eco-DRR in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. This project aimed to reduce flood and gully erosion risks and support community livelihoods through applying Integrated Water Resource Management in the Lukaya River Basin, located in the outskirts of Kinshasa. The report was presented at a Side Event on Ecosystem-based DRR and CCA at the European Development Days held on 14-16 June (see below). Read the Report.
Flooding: Cooperation across Government
Between December 2015 and January 2016 storms Desmond, Eva and Frank caused flooding in the north of England and Wales and parts of Scotland and Northern Ireland. In January 2016 the Government of the United Kingdom launched a National Flood Resilience Review to assess how the country can be better protected from future flooding. One of the key recommendations of the Review is to increase funding for ecosystems-based measures for flood management, an approach that was supported by the majority of witnesses. Read the Report.

Assessment of coastal protection as an ecosystem service in Europe
Mapping and assessment of ecosystem services is essential to provide scientific support to EU biodiversity policy. Coastal protection has been mostly analysed in the frame of coastal vulnerability studies or in local, habitat-specific assessments. A paper by Liquete and colleagues provides a conceptual and methodological approach to assess coastal protection as an ecosystem service at different spatial-temporal scales, and is applied to the entire EU coastal zone.
