PEDRR at 2nd UN Environment Assembly, 23-26 May 2016, Nairobi
At UNEA-2, PEDRR released a Briefing  Paper on "Accelerating implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction and the 2030 Agenda through Ecosystem Solution" at the Side Event on "Healthy Ecosystems, Resilient Planet". Moderated by Dr. Robert Glasser, Special Representative of the UN Secretary General on Disaster Risk Reduction, the side event was well-attended and featured panelists Ed Barrow (IUCN- Director, Global Ecosystem Management Programme) and Simon Clow (AXA Insurance- Group Head of Stakeholder Engagement). Key discussion highlights included the role of insurance sector in risk reduction, the need to integrate environment in managing risks and the importance of strengthening community resilience. Adaptation Futures Conference, 10-13 May 2016, Rotterdam
The Session Report is now available of the Side Event entitled, "Exploring the potential of ecosystem based approaches - Ecosystem based Adaptation (EbA) and Ecosystem based Disaster Risk Reduction (Eco-DRR)", which was organised in context of the PLACARD project. The interactive session identified synergies between EbA and Eco-DRR implementation and explored how nature-based solutions can enhance collaboration between CCA and DRR. Gathering approximately 65 participants, the session identified lessons and next steps for science, policy, and implementation. Read the report and check out photos in our PEDRR Facebook.

Natural flood management protects local communities

Newcastle University’s ‘Proactive Catchment Management’ research group is promoting Natural Flood Management (NFM) initiatives across the United Kingdom, which involves working with natural processes to store, slow and filter water within the natural landscape. A suite of low-cost, carefully designed and managed NFM features have been trialled in a number of locations. Read the Article.

A sense of place at risk: Perspectives of residents of coastal Louisiana on non-structural risk reduction strategies
Flooding and land loss in southern Louisiana, USA, threaten livelihoods and the physical existence of communities. Coastal restoration is viewed as essential to retaining land, reversing some land loss, as well as potentially generating thousands of new jobs. How residents understand and respond to the challenges of climate change will provide possible strategies and recommendations for local and state policy choices. Read the Report.

Ecosystem Protection Project Infrastructure and Communities (EPIC-Chile)

Natural infrastructure provides physical protection against extreme weather events such as floods, coastal erosion, storm surges, cyclones and forest fires. To help protect communities from disasters and tackle the adverse effects of climate change, the Ecosystem Protecting Infrastructure and Communities (EPIC) project investigates the role that healthy ecosystems play in reducing disaster risk and supporting community-based CCA. IUCN is working alongside the Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research (SLF), where the project is promoting the use of forests for avalanche risk management. Watch the Video in Spanish. |
