The Effectiveness, Costs and Coastal Protection Benefits of Natural and Nature-Based Defences
There is currently great interest in the restoration and conservation of coastal habitats for protection from flooding and erosion. This paper provides a synthesis of the costs and benefits of coastal restoration projects and analyses the effectiveness of coastal habitats in providing coastal protection. It finds that the costs of nature-based defence projects, using salt-marshes and mangroves, can be two to five times cheaper than engineered structures. Read more about the multiple benefits of nature-based defences.

Ecosystem services and Biodiversity - Science for Environmental Policy
Ecosystems provide multiple benefits to humanity, including food, clean water, flood protection, cultural heritage and a sense of place. However, many of these benefits derived from ecosystem services are under severe threat. Decision makers need clear information on how biodiversity underpins these services, the demand for such services, and the pressures impairing ecosystems’ capacity to provide these services.
