Dredging versus hedging: Comparing hard infrastructure to ecosystem-based adaptation (EbA) to flooding
Efforts to ameliorate flooding have historically centred on engineered solutions, although there is increasing interest in EbA options. This study compares the costs and benefits of hard infrastructure and EbA options to mitigate flooding using data from two catchments in Fiji. Results show that planting riparian buffers is the most cost-effective option. However, while afforestation provides greater overall benefits, the absolute level of protection provided by this strategy is low. Read the Journal Article.

Land system architecture: Using land systems to adapt and mitigate global environmental change

Authors bring attention to the importance of land systems in designing climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies. Land systems (mosaics of land use and cover) are human–environment systems. Changes in land systems result in habitat loss, release of atmospheric greenhouse gases, and changes in ecosystem functions and the array of ecosystem services they provide. Land systems, therefore, should be a central feature of how humankind manages its relationship with nature. Read the Journal Article.
