Wetlands International CEO speaks at the UN High Level Debate on SDGs in New York

 
Speaking at the High Level Thematic Debate on SDGs in New York on 20 April, Wetlands International’s CEO Jane Madgwick stated that better management and restoration of wetlands is essential for achieving at least seven of the SDGs. She also made reference to the Paris Agreement on Climate Change and the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, which when implemented together with the SDGs can trigger increased investments for improving the status of wetlands, among the fastest declining ecosystems in the world. WI shared its innovative initiatives, such as Building with Nature, that are based on integrated approaches. Read the Article.

Managing Coasts with Natural Solutions
 
Produced by The World Bank Group, the report provides recommendations for how the protective services of mangroves and coral reefs can be measured and valued in a manner consistent with national economic accounts and included in other decision-making processes. It synthesizes evidence of the coastal protection provided by mangroves and coral reefs, and analyzes how ecologists, economists and engineers estimate the coastal protection services of coastal habitats. Caribbean: Instructors in disaster risk reduction undergo training
The Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) Commission, in partnership with the European Commission, has developed a Training of Trainers Instructor programme on DRR that is tailored for the region. Targeting regional agencies as well as NGOs, the training was delivered on 11-15 April and focused on mainstreaming ecosystem-based approaches for DRR and CCA into policy and programme management. It is based on the Caribbean Regional Training of Trainers delivered in May 2014 by UNEP together with the University of the West Indies. Read the Article.
Upcoming Event
Asian Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction (AMCDRR)
The AMCDRR is a biennial conference jointly organised by different Member States and UNISDR, since 2005. However, this will be the first Asian Ministerial Conference for Disaster Risk Reduction after adoption of the Sendai Framework and will be hosted by the Government of India on 2-5 November in New Delhi. The intended outcome will be to develop an ‘Asian Regional Action Plan for Implementation of the Sendai Framework’. Ecosystem-based DRR is already on the Agenda. Registration opens on 2 May.
