First delivery of Training Course on Natural Infrastructure for Business (NI4Biz)

On 14 April, the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) and UNEP delivered the first Training Course on NI4Biz to WBCSD member companies in Montreux, Switzerland. The Training Course raises awareness of the multiple benefits of natural infrastructure (NI) solutions, such as wetlands, and promotes private sector investments in NI. More than 25 companies including national BCSDs from the Philippines, Saudi Arabia, Thailand, Singapore, India, Portugal and Brazil participated in the training. The initiative was developed together with ARCADIS and Shell and will be officially launched at the IUCN World Conservation Congress in September 2015. Learn more about NI4Biz.

Building resilience to climate change requires investment in nature
The Paris Agreement acknowledged that finance was essential for helping climate-vulnerable countries adapt to climate change. To date, public finance for adaptation has largely been allocated for constructed or engineered infrastructure. However, investment in the protection and restoration of nature is perhaps the most important yet under-rated sector. Read the Article.

Building climate resilience with nature
The Nature Conservancy (TNC) announced several new partnerships to highlight the role of nature-based infrastructure solutions, such as mangroves, coral reefs, wetlands and dunes, as an important line of defence for coastal and community protection. TNC will work with Risk Management Solutions (RMS), The Global Disaster Preparedness Center and the engineering firm CH2M to build standards for modelling mangroves and salt marshes and incorporate natural systems in disaster preparedness plans. More information.

The Nature Conservancy works with the Grenada Red Cross Society on environmental resilience
TNC and the Grenada Red Cross Society (GRCS) are implementing a new initiative called “At the Water’s Edge”, in Grenville Bay, Grenada, in order to mitigate the impact of rising sea levels that threaten reefs and marine ecosystems. The project submerged a 30 m breakwater on the Grenville reefs, which is expected to yield higher ecosystem benefits than the traditional use of concrete seawalls. Read the Article.
