Ecosystems help cope with climate change
A project in Bangladesh conducted research on the Chanda Beel wetland and Balukhali Village and discovered that water infrastructure, such as sea walls, dykes and dams, can do more harm than good. It highlights the importance of ecosystem-based approaches for enabling poor and vulnerable communities to adapt to climate change impacts. Read the article.

Evaluating ecosystem-based approaches for disaster risk reduction in Fiji
Research done in Fiji has found that annual losses from flooding will increase by 90% with moderate climate change. Evidence from developed countries shows that ecosystem-based solutions can be more cost effective than engineered infrastructure in reducing risk, making it attractive for developing countries with limited resources. The research has led to greater understanding of ecosystem-based approaches and use of cost-benefit analysis in evaluating climate change adaptation options in Fiji. Read the report.

Climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction in Jamaica
The Government of Jamaica, the European Union and UNEP have implemented the Climate Change Adaptation and Disaster Risk Reduction Project, which aims to increase the resilience of coastal ecosystems to climate change impacts, for instance through mangrove reforestation and tackling the encroachment of invasive species. International workshop on public policies and governance to enhance urban resilience, held during World Water Week
On 28 August- 02 September, the Institute of Water Policy, Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy and the National University of Singapore are organising a workshop on “Policies and Governance to enhance urban resilience: Impacts of droughts and floods”, during the World Water Week in Stockholm, Sweden. The workshop will discuss the impacts of droughts and floods on the resilience of cities, looking at water, land use, energy, food and environmental issues. More information.

Business can access new markets through innovative products and services, reduce costs by being more resource efficient and reduce exposure to climate-related risks through nature-based solutions. World Mountain Forum 2016
Taking place on 17-20 October in Mbale, Uganda, this year’s Forum will focus on “Mountains for Our Future” with four sub-themes, of which one will focus on DRR. It will feature the involvement of local populations and integration of local knowledge into national strategies to maintain critical services of mountain ecosystems.
