Using green infrastructure to control urban floods: A win-win for cities

           © Eugene Phoen
Singapore, like many other densely-populated cities, is at risk of flooding. One way the country is tackling this challenge is by greening public spaces and encouraging private development to follow the government's flagship "ABC" programme, which makes water spaces "Active, Beautiful and Clean". Investments in "green infrastructure" are paying off: they make the city more resilient and sustainable in the long-term, and also create more spaces for people to meet and interact. Read the article.

Experts launch project to assess drought effects on ecosystems and how communities can adapt
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), The Nature Conservancy, and Wildlife Conservation Society, under the Science for Nature and People Partnership (SNAPP), are aiming to tackle the future increase in droughts. They are launching an Ecological Drought Working Group, composed of drought, climate change, economic and conservation experts, who will assess the ecological impacts of drought on ecosystems. They also seek to provide recommendations on how local communities can effectively prepare for and respond to drought impacts. Continue reading.

Resilience of tsunami in coastal regions of Kachchh in the State of Gujarat, India, by use of mangrove belts and numerical modelling

 © Patel et al.
Data collected after the Indian Ocean tsunami in 2004 identified that mangrove forests played a critical role in saving human lives and property. Therefore, the study mapped the present density of mangroves in the Kachchh coastline in the state of Gujarat, India. Run-up elevation maps, using Shuttle Radar Topographic Mission (SRTM) data, showed the potential area of inundation due to various wave heights along different parts of the Gujarat coast. Protection measures against inundation due to tsunami can be planned based on the results obtained. Read the Journal article.

Ecological engineering applied to aquatic environments
As the EU Water Directive calls to restore aquatic environments, the Master Plan for Water Development and Management adopted in 2009 identifies a set of measures that use ecosystem functions to contribute to a range of societal goals, such as the prevention or treatment of pollution, flood risk management and the preservation of water resources. Call for proposals
EU funding opportunities to support disaster risk prevention
The EU Cohesion Policy has launched a call of funding opportunities for disaster risk prevention in the period 2014-2020. Key fundable activities to support risk prevention and management include flood and coastal defence, ecosystem-based solutions, and disaster resilience and climate-proofing public infrastructure. In order to adapt to climate change, the EU encourages the development of green infrastructure, to protect biodiversity and preserve ecosystem services. The funding is only available to EU Member States. Further information.

E-discussion on mainstreaming disaster risk reduction
and climate change adaptation

UNDP is inviting people to participate in an online discussion, which will shape the design of an integrated framework for mainstreaming both DRR and CCA into development. The purpose is to engage stakeholder groups, experts, practitioners and policymakers worldwide in a dialogue to capture experiences and feedback and subsequently develop an integrated DRR-CCA mainstreaming framework. The e-discussion will be held in three phases starting from 29 March to 20 May 2016. Find out more.
