The effects of river restoration on flood risk and flood hydrology
This article shows how the strategic planting of trees on floodplains can reduce the height of flooding in towns downstream by up to 20%. The study used a digital terrain model of the landscape and a hydrological model simulation, and found that planting trees and increasing the number of logjams can reduce the peak height of a potential flood.

Natural partners: Why nature conservation and natural capital partners should work together
Both natural capital and nature protection approaches have something to offer, but neither is enough on its own. A strategic combination of both would be a more effective route to managing environmental challenges and reducing risks of floods and droughts. New tools such as natural capital accounting and market-based policies can be used. See the full report.
