PEDRR Shoutout: National workshop on Eco-DRR for improving community resilience in Nepal
Rural roads serve as key lifelines for many communities in Nepal, but they also cause erosion, shallow landslides, and river sedimentation. As a solution, “eco-safe roads,” or those that incorporate soil bio-engineering techniques minimise negative environmental impacts, and thus help reduce economic losses and even enhance local livelihoods. This was the main discussion at a 2 day workshop organized by the Government of Nepal’s Department of Soil Conservation and Watershed Management (DSCWM), IUCN Nepal and University of Lausanne (UNIL), which brought together international and Nepali landslide scientists, students, practitioners, and NGOs working in this field.
