World Environment Day 2019
World Environment Day takes place every year on 5 June. This year, China will be the global host, under the theme "Beat Air Pollution". Thousands of cities, schools, non-governmental organizations, businesses and groups will organize creative and fun events to inspire further action. Get involved here

Linking World Environment Day to Eco-DRR

Emissions of air pollutants such as black carbon and methane largely contribute to climate change, which is projected to increase the frequency, intensity and impacts of hazards such as storms, and floods. Ecosystems such as wetlands and mangroves buffer against such hazards, but also act as natural carbon sinks, as they sequester and store carbon from the atmosphere. Protecting and restoring ecosystems is thus crucial to reducing disaster risk, beating air pollution and mitigating climate change.

UN calls for investments in green infrastructure

This SmartCitiesWorld article focuses on the importance of increased investments in ecosystem-based solutions, and particularly water-related ecosystems, to increase disaster resilience. “Seventy per cent of the world we imagine in 2050 is yet to be built. We have a tremendous opportunity to build infrastructure that goes hand in hand with protecting nature,” said Joyce Msuya, Acting Executive Director of UN Environment. These messages on the importance of green and blue infrastructure for building disaster and climate resilience were also highlighted at the recently held Global Platform on Disaster Risk Reduction in Geneva. A greener and brighter future for cities

Blue-Green Infrastructure (BGI) is a strategically planned network of natural and semi-natural areas that are designed and managed to deliver a wide range of environmental, economic, and social benefits, such as improved water quality, reduced flood risk, reduced infrastructure costs and increased green urban spaces. This article provides case studies where cities are implementing BGI approaches and highlights benefits and lessons.

An inclusive plan for climate change adaptation

This article from the Dhaka Tribune calls for the application of community-based and ecosystem-based adaptation approaches in areas such as the Sundarbans mangrove area, involving communities in the protection and restoration of ecosystems on which they depend for their livelihoods. The article emphasizes the long-term cost-effectiveness of  achieving community empowerment and climate change resilience through such integrated approaches. Read the story here

Core principles for successfully implementing and upscaling Nature-based Solutions
Nature-based Solutions (NbS) can be an effective framework for addressing multiple societal challenges, including disaster risks and climate change. This study compares NbS with other ecosystem-based approaches, offering a critical analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of NbS principles. Efforts aim to develop evidence-based standards and guidelines, and to implement, assess and upscale NbS globally.
