Training of Trainers on Eco-DRR led by PEDRR, UN Environment and UGM in Yogyakarta, Indonesia

On 18-22 March, PEDRR partners led a 5-day Training of Trainers on Eco-DRR and Climate Change Adaptation in partnership with UN Environment and the Universitas Gadjah Mada in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Supported by the Government of Norway, the training was aimed at mainstreaming Eco-DRR teaching in universities and other training institutions in the Asia Pacific region, which is highly vulnerable to natural hazards and climate change. Read the story here

Protection of massive African peatland: A huge win for planet

Healthy peatlands act as natural buffers against storms and floods, and are important natural carbon sinks. The Congo Basin peatland, for instance, contains about 30 GT of carbon, equivalent to 15 years of emissions by the United States. Chapter 3 of the UN Environment Annual Report 2018 published this month highlights the progress made in the protection of the Congo Basin peatland complex throughout 2018, regarding it as a 'huge win' for the planet.

The United Nations World Water Development Report 2019:
Leaving No One Behind

Coordinated by UNESCO and produced in collaboration with UN Water organizations, the UN World Water Development Report 2019 was launched on 19 March in Geneva. Section 2.3 is dedicated to disaster risk reduction, and calls for a paradigm shift towards an integrated holistic approach to water management, including land management and environmental protection. The chapter highlights the importance of nature-based solutions in mitigating water stress and achieving water security. Read the full report here

Coastal wetland distribution: Delineating domains of macro-scale drivers and local feedbacks
Researchers from Duke University analyzed hundreds of U.S. estuaries to assess wetland distribution and resilience to natural hazards and climate change. The study aimed to assess how coastal wetlands respond to such hazards and proposed multi-scale strategies to protect and restore coastal wetland ecosystems. Coastal marshes provide shoreline protection, flood prevention and carbon sequestration, among other benefits.
An assessment framework for climate-proof nature-based solutions

A new research paper published in Science of the Total Environment proposes a new and 'dynamic' assessment framework to analyze the effectiveness of nature-based solutions, particularly in the face of future climate change. This framework can support decision-making on whether to adopt nature-based and/or conventional solutions for risk reduction.

Local and indigenous knowledge and conservation practices in mountain ecosystems

The IUCN Commission on Ecosystem Management is looking for case studies on local and indigenous knowledge and conservation practices in mountain ecosystems. Papers may focus on resilient infrastructure and climate adaptation inspired by indigenous knowledge systems. This is an excellent opportunity to explore linkages between indigenous knowledge, mountain ecosystem conservation, and disaster and climate risk reduction. Deadline for Abstracts: 15 April 2019.
