Initiative aims to make more green infrastructure projects ‘bankable’
|

Green infrastructure projects are generally uncertain in investment as the benefits are hardly visible. The C40 Climate Leadership Group, World Resources Institute and Citi Foundation have jointly formulated the Financing Sustainable Cities Initiative in London in order to encourage the investor community to invest in green infrastructure projects to fight increasing disaster risk and address climate change in the urban area. Cosumnes River Provides Model for Floodplain Restoration in California
|

|
California’s 5 years drought has sparked an alert on the need of investigating on groundwater recharge and floodplain restoration so as to fight the groundwater overdraft problem. The University of California has carried out a study on the Cosumnes River in northern California and results show that floodplain restoration can substantially recharge groundwater and restore natural habitats. The findings suggested a way to make the state’s surface and groundwater systems more sustainable and resilient to sudden environmental changes. Check out the full article here.

Seafloor Erosion in Coral Reef Ecosystems Leaves Coastal Communities at Risk
|

When seafloor is eroding, coral reefs fail to keep pace with sea level rise, and this in turn aggravates coastal communities’ exposure to risks from storms, waves and erosion. Geological survey researchers in the U.S. have found cases of seafloor erosion in Florida, the Caribbean and Hawaii. It is shown that the combined effect of rising sea and seafloor erosion has already increased water depths more than what most scientists expected to occur many decades from now. As wetlands in Kenya dry up, locals opt for alternative livelihood options

Wetlands are important to Kenyans in many ways, since they support key economic pillars – water services, agriculture and tourism and also safeguard communities against disasters by absorbing excess rainfall during floods. The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality in the U.S. and its partners are holding the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Green Infrastructure Conference from 31 May to 2 June 2017 at the Cobo Center in Detroit, Michigan. The conference will discuss on the possible uses of green infrastructure and stormwater management strategies to regulate the surface runoff in the Great Lakes region so as to improve local resilience to floods.
