A Green Infrastructure Guidebook for City Planners: Naturally Resilient Communities
 
The Nature Conservancy has developed an online interactive tool featuring 30 case studies, mostly about cities which used nature-based solutions to protect themselves against climate threats including flooding and coastal erosion. The tool is designed as a one-stop hub for city planners, engineers and community leaders. Read more here and also check out the tool.

In the Nevados de Chillan region in Chile, avalanches comprise a silent threat to an increasing number of local communities. Research of IUCN indicated that forests increase protection against avalanches for local communities. Check out the video to learn more.

Before the famine: Enhancing climate resilience of vulnerable communities and ecosystems in Somalia
As 70% of Somalis are dependent on climate-sensitive agriculture and pastoralism, resilience building has become a major priority of the Government. Through a UNDP-supported programme, farmers in Somalia are promoting grazing systems that consider the carrying capacity of the entire ecosystem to help build local resilience against drought and floods. Oroville Dam crisis spurs debate on California’s aging water infrastructure
California is now having a critical debate on the state’s water management approach. Under the recent extreme drought condition and also the recent near-disaster at the Oroville Dam two months ago, academia, NGOs and scientists are now suggesting a new way to manage water in the state – combining green infrastructure with grey infrastructure for better flood protection. Alliances for green infrastructure: State of Watershed Investment 2016

 


NGO Ecosystem Marketplace published a report that captures the size, scale, and scope of market mechanisms for green infrastructure for water management. Looking at green infrastructure development from a business perspective, the report discusses market mechanisms of various watershed investment schemes including for flood risk reduction, maintaining stream flows during droughts, stabilizing soil to prevent erosion and landslides, and the protection of soil productivity to ensure food security. The congress focuses on greening of buildings and on how this could reduce urban risks including urban heatwaves, rainwater mismanagement and urban floods.
