Peatlands of Southeast Asia Are Facing a Disaster
Flooded oil palm plantation, Riau (Deltares, 2014)
A study commissioned by Wetlands International and executed by Deltares suggests that extensive drainage of peatlands for oil palm cultivation in the Rajang river delta in Sarawak, East Malaysia, results in such massive land subsidence that this will lead to extensive and devastating flooding incidents in the coming decades. The study found that about 82% of the Rajang delta will be irreversibly flooded within 100 years, and substantial areas are already experiencing drainage problems. This will increasingly impact local communities, the economy and biodiversity unless land use of the region’s peatlands is radically changed. Read more

Deforestation Worsens Flooding
in Kashmir
In April 2015, 18 people died of landslides amid heavy rains in Fraswad and Shalnand villages in Jammu and Kashmir, India due to deforestation caused by illegal tree harvesting by timber smugglers. Between 2003 and 2012, with a steep increase in demand for housing and infrastructure development, 6,281 hectares of forest land that used to serve as a sponge holding soil and prevent flooding were diverted for other uses. The State Forest Conservation Act of 1997 requires any deforested area to be replaced with twice that area of reforestation on degraded land, but a report in 2012 said that hadn't happened because funds allocated for afforestation had been spent on administration. Study finds St. Louis River's ecosystem services valued over
US$5 billion per year, including for flood protection
According to a recent study conducted by Earth Economics of Seattle, the St. Louis River in the U.S. provides an estimated US$5 billion to US$14 billion in ecosystem service benefits every year, which includes up to US$2.6 billion per year in flood risk reduction, noting a thriving river system with wetlands, grasslands and adjacent forests which are able to soak up significant amounts of water. The report also points out that quantifying the value of ecosystem services allows the value of natural capital to be included in economic tools, which enables us to make wiser public and private decisions.
