Assessing Mozambique’s exposure to coastal climate hazards and erosion
The newly published journal article has adopted the Exposure Index (EI) method to calculate the exposure of Mozambique’s coastline to coastal hazards. Based on the results, they have assessed the importance of the natural habitats in reducing exposure to coastal hazards. The information has enabled local officials to design effective coastal plans and increase the coastal resilience in Mozambique. Read the full article here.

Nature to the rescue: Using ecosystem services to reduce flood risks
Saskia Marijinissen of the UN Development Programme shares her reflections on ecosystem-based flood risk management approach. Originally from the Netherlands, a country that is built on a massive flood plain, she understood very well how heavy infrastructure worked to protect people from flooding. In this opinion piece, she discusses how nature-based solutions are increasingly adopted in different countries and could be a good alternative to heavy infrastructure. Earlier this month, Wetlands International launched a new report entitled, ‘Water Shocks: Wetlands & Human Migration in the Sahel’, which is now available online. It highlights the worsening condition of wetlands in the Sahel and how wetlands degradation is undermining people’s well-being and resulting in migration. Learn more here.
Resilience and Resource Efficiency in Cities
 


Cities are home to over half the world’s population and account for 70-75% of natural resource consumption, putting enormous pressure on the environment. At the same time, cities are highly prone to a range of hazards due to high concentration of people, infrastructure and economic activities. To be held in Sendai, Japan on 25-28 November 2017, the World Bosai Forum IDRC Sendai 2017 conference aims to share knowledge gained from the Great East Japan Earthquake and facilitate practical solutions for disaster risk reduction. A Call for poster abstracts submission on themes related to disaster risk governance and disaster preparedness is now open. SAGE, the Systems Approach to Geomorphic Engineering, is a community of practitioners dedicated to protecting the coastlines. In June and July, they are organizing two seminars on coastal and ecological resilience building. The June webinar will discuss ecological effects of sea level rise and how to mitigate the flooding impacts. The July webinar will discuss investing in coastal conservation and resilience building.
