Lima kicks off development of 30 Year Green Infrastructure Plan
Back in 2015, Lima, the capital city of Peru, made a commitment to restore the natural infrastructure of the region to manage drought, flood and landslide hazards more efficiently. Lima’s water utility company SEDAPAL has developed a Green Infrastructure Master Plan to leverage critical services of nature, for regulating water flows and complement grey infrastructure. However, implementation of the plan is far from easy. Check out their progress here in the full article.

New Orleans fights flooding by welcoming it
A lot of cities fight to keep water out. However, in 2017 city planners of New Orleans in the United States realized that they could protect the city by reintegrating water into the urban landscape, instead of pushing it out. They will implement a series of resilience projects, including diverting water into the landscape, converting sites into ‘water gardens’, replacing roads with permeable sidewalks, and introducing new green infrastructure in the city. New Orleans suffered catastrophic losses from Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Learn more about the city’s current efforts here.

Ancient water tanks of Sri Lanka to adapt to a changing climate
To adapt to the changing climate, Sri Lanka is re-inventing its ancient water tank system, which makes use of the natural topography and keeps the natural cycle of water. The ancient water tank system, after years of neglect in the colonial era, no longer effectively functions, leading to severe droughts, water contamination and poor crop yields. The Government of Sri Lanka and UN Development Programme are now reintroducing the water tank system as a way to combat the impact of climate change, hoping to make communities more self-sufficient and to build higher climate resilience.
