Panel Discussion On Ecosystem-based Adaptation investment to reduce disaster risk, 06 December, Venue:  Rio Pavilion.

Ramsar, the European Commission, and the United Nations Development Programme are co-hosting a panel discussion on how EbA can  reduce disaster risk and catalyze social, economic and environmental dividends. The objectives of the panel are to share on-the-ground  evidence of the efficacy and cost-effectiveness of Eco-DRR work and identify partnership opportunities which bridge the biological diversity, climate change, and DRR practitioner communities.

Synthesis report on experiences with ecosystem-based approaches to climate change and to climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction

Published by the Secretariat of the Convention for Biological Diversity (CBD) together with other stakeholders, this report provides a synthesis of global experiences to ecosystem-based adaptation (EbA) and ecosystem-based DRR. It includes key findings from the CBD Technical Workshop  held in Johannesburg, South Africa, in October 2015, where a range of experts and practitioners discussed national and regional  efforts towards implementation of EbA and Eco-DRR measures.

Africa convenes to accelerate implementation of the Sendai Framework
Port Louis, Mauritius, hosted the 6th Regional Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction in Africa from 22-25 November. Some 800 practitioners had registered to attend the event including 300 government representatives. The platform served as the first opportunity for the region to convene since the adoption of the Sendai Framework. In the pre-Platform build-up, IUCN convened a two-day workshop on Eco-DRR, which brought together representatives from the Ministries of Environment and Disaster Management of at least 18 African countries, scientists and practitioners and identified opportunities to scale-up the approach in the region. The Draft Outcome document is now available, with specific references to Eco-DRR, particularly under Priority 2 of the Sendai Framework. Click here

Natural flood defenses protect homes in the UK
Natural defenses in Somerset, the United Kingdom, have protected homes from torrential rain damages from the recent storm “Angus”. Natural flood prevention structures were put in place in 2013, such as allowing trees to fall into rivers to slow water flows and using floodplains to temporarily store water. Since then, the defenses have reduced flood peaks by 10% helping to protect £30 million worth of property. Follow the link to access the full article.
