PEDRR Shout Out: New book publication on Eco-DRR
 
 A new book publication on "Ecosystem-based Disaster Risk Reduction and Adaptation In Practice" is now available online. Published by Springer and edited by Renaud, F.G., Sudmeier-Rieux, K., Estrella, M., Nehren, U., the book will be officially  launched at the IUCN World Conservation Congress in Hawaii on 04      September. This book is the second volume published through the PEDRR   network and compiles recent developments globally in the field of ecosystem-based  disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation. Comprising 24 chapters that focus on economics, decision-making tools, policies and innovation, the book will interest scientists, practitioners, policymakers and students. For details

BRICS to boost Sendai Framework
The Ministers for Disaster Management from Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (BRICS), met in Udaipur, Rajasthan, India on 22-23 August 2016. The Ministers reaffirmed BRICS’ commitment to the implementation of the Sendai Framework and its role in working towards disaster risk reduction. The countries agreed to establish a Joint Task Force on Disaster Risk Management to facilitate regular dialogues, mutual support and collaboration on disaster and climate risk management among BRICS countries. Read the complete declaration

City Climate Vulnerability Assessment and Ecosystem-based Adaptation in Laos
Due to rapid urbanisation, Laos is highly vulnerable to climate-induced extreme events such as floods and droughts. The Climate Technology Center and Network (CTCN) will conduct climate vulnerability assessments in six cities and identify ecosystem-based adaptation interventions to reduce climate risks, which will have additional benefits for the enhanced provision of water and waste treatment.Read more

Seawalls, coastal forests in Japan help reduce tsunami damage, study finds
The Tohoku region in Japan experiences tsunamis, with the most recent events in 1896, 1933, 1960, and 2011. This study analyses protection provided by engineered and ecosystem-based solutions against tsunami impacts. Oppla is a new online platform funded by the European Commission, which aims to bring together knowledge on natural capital and ecosystem services. To be launched in September 2016,the platform aims to engage businesses, policymakers, researchers and managers, and function as a marketplace – which will also enable members to seek expert advice from practitioners specialising in natural capital and ecosystem services.Read more

The Conference on Green Infrastructure: Nature Based Solutions For Sustainable And Resilient Cities will be held on 4-7 April 2017 in Orvieto, Italy. The event will focus on bringing a transdisciplinary approach to urban planning based on green infrastructure as nature-based solutions.
