Stream restoration: nature-based solutions
The Climate Change Adaptation and Land Management team of Wageningen University and Research Center, Netherlands, is conducting field and laboratory experimental research on streams to understand how these ecosystems can best mitigate climate change and act as buffers against disasters. Research projects are exploring the most effective restoration measures such as re-introduction of critical macroinvertebrates to ensure ecosystem functioning, reconnecting streams by additing sand, and increasing microhabitats and flow diversity by adding dead wood. Click here for more details

Urban adaptation to climate change in Europe 2016
This report gives an overview of actions that can be taken to adapt cities in Europe to climate change and highlights the progress made over the last couple of years. It draws attention to the pressure on ecosystems in urban contexts and promotes practices like blue-green infrastructure (sustainable drainage systems, rain gardens, green roofs) and ecosystem-based adaptation (EbA) as strategies for resilient cities. Along with economic analysis, ecosystem services are proposed as a vital guiding factor for climate change adaptation in the decision-making processes related to urban adaptation. Read the full publication

EcoSummit 2016 - Ecological Sustainability: Engineering Change
The 5th International EcoSummit will take place in Montpellier, France, from 29 August to 1 September 2016. The conference will center on the ecology of terrestrial ecosystems and all habitats that are integrated within those ecosystems, including river networks, wetlands and coastlines. Focus will be placed on fragile ecosystems that are more likely to suffer the consequences of climate change and anthropogenic pressure. 1500 delegates from 75 countries are expected to attend the 11 plenary presentations. For details

Bringing Nature Back - Mekong Region
This video demonstrates how non-conventional engineering solutions can strengthen rural infrastructure in Northern Vietnam, help resist the hazards associated with climate change and provide opportunities to enhance community livelihoods. The featured project, implemented by the Asian Development Bank focuses on bioengineering as a low-cost alternative to conventional slope stabilization and protection technique. The video points out some of the merits of bio-engineered solutions such as the use of locally-grown species of grasses and shrubs that are wildlife-friendly and providing economic products such as leaves for roofing or fodder. These solutions strengthen over time and can be maintained by local communities. Watch the video
