Strategic Mainstreaming of Ecosystem-based Adaptation in Vietnam
This ecosystem-based adaptation (EbA) project in Vietnam aims to support the development of practical EbA solutions, which would be integrated into provincial land-use, socio-economic development planning and other relevant planning sectors. It also aims to contribute to disaster risk reduction and livelihood enhancement particularly in agriculture, forestry and fisheries. Led by the Government of Vietnam and other partner organisations, the project will conduct vulnerability assessments for EbA in the two pilot provinces of Quang Binh and Ha Tinh in north central Vietnam. A lesson from Ellicott City
Ellicott City, USA is prone to flooding by Patapsco River and Tiber Creek. This year, Ellicott City witnessed a devastating flash flood on 30 July. The disaster occurred due to extreme precipitation and was exacerbated due to urbanization and loss of ecosystems and the flood-protection services they provide. The paved surfaces of roads could not infiltrate water and accelerated the surface runoff. In a Washington Post article, Deborah Brosnan draws upon the lesson learnt from Elliot City to emphasize  the benefits of natural defenses against floods, landslides and coastal storms. She outlines four strategies of action to promote and materialise ecosystem-based solutions. Read further

Biodiversity and Nature-based Climate Solutions
This blog by Prof. Thomas E. Lovejoy of George Mason University draws attention to the links of Nature and remedies for the impact of Climate change. He outlines the role of ecosystem services for climate change adaptation such as carbon sequestration and heat absorption by oceans, coastal flood and storm protection by mangroves and wetlands, and flood and drought regulation by grasslands and tropical forests to provide food and support livelihoods during harvest fails. The author argues that restoration of ecosystems at a large scale could take as much as 0.5 degrees Celsius of temperature increase out of the climate change equation. He highlights that to limit global temperature increase to 1.5 degrees Celsius, protecting existing ecosystems and their diversity along with an ambitious restoration program is vital. Read more
