To plant or not to plant
The role of mangroves to reduce the risk of storm surges and typhoons is now widely-recognized, resulting in multiple initiatives to restore mangroves. However, mangrove restoration projects often lack the appropriate technical expertise, resulting in poor results and negative impacts on the local communities and surrounding ecosystems. In this blog, Bregje van Wesenbeeck of Deltares describes the mangrove restoration project in Central Java which applied a different approach called Ecological Mangrove Restoration (EMR). EMR promotes the natural regeneration of mangroves and avoids artificial mangrove plantation. Read more

Sri Lanka Prime Minister: Mangroves curb climate threat
 
Sri Lanka's Prime Minister states that the role of mangroves in carbon sequestration is vital for fighting against climate change. On World Mangrove Day on 26 July, Sri Lanka's President opened the world's first mangrove museum at Pambala,Chilaw. The museum will serve as a hub for conservation training for adults and educating children about the value of mangroves. Read more

Tacloban, Philipines: Disaster proofing the city through nature-based and engineered solutions
The city of Talcoban, Philippines, together with Dutch engineers and multiple stakeholders, are restructuring its coastal protection after typhoon Yolanda. This initiative fosters integrated nature- based and infrastructure measures, including mangrove restoration, beach replenishment, sand dune management as well as elevated embankments and special protection for roads, promoting “Building with Nature and Eco-engineering”. Urban DRR and Resilience
The Swiss NGO DRR Platform is organizing an event on ‘Urban Disaster Risk Reduction and Urban Resilience’ from 6 – 8 December 2016 in Thun and in Berne, Switzerland. Registration  will start from September. The event attracts Swiss and international experts on DRR and CCA, civil society, governments, private sector and research communities to promote dialogue, knowledge sharing and networking. Read more
