Nature-based solutions to land degradation

One-third of all land on our planet is degraded, affecting 1.5 billion people, their agricultural production and health. IUCN is working with communities, using their traditional knowledge to develop nature-based solutions to reduce land degradation. For instance, traditional pastoral ecosystems in Jordan is being promoted, and in Burkina Faso the 'Zai crop cultivation' uses pit cultivation to retain soil moisture. To Read More

Mainstreaming ecosystem-based adaptation: Transformation toward sustainability in urban governance and planning
|
|
This publication examines potential ways to mainstream ecosystem-based adaptation into urban planning. Eight municipalities in Southern Germany were investigated. The study highlights that successful mainstreaming is driven by prior experience of municipal government departments in mainstreaming other cross-cutting issues, such as environmental planning, climate change mitigation and disaster risk management. A framework for assessing mainstreaming capacity of local governments is presented. Read more

Canada, the United States, and Mexico will work together to implement the Paris Agreement
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of Canada, President Barack Obama of USA, and President Enrique Peña Nieto of Mexico pledged to work towards a competitive, low-carbon and sustainable North American economy and society. The meeting highlighted greater cooperation on climate change mitigation and adaptation, focusing on integrated sectors, shared ecosystems, human health and disaster risk reduction. Read More
State of Odisha’s initiative to combat and adapt to climate change impacts
The state of Odisha, India, is highly vulnerable to climate change. In last few years, the high monsoon variability has caused drought and flood affecting food security in the state. The Government of Odisha has submitted a funding proposal to the UNFCC Green Climate Fund to ensure food security and resilience in vulnerable tribal areas. Climate resilient agriculture practices and groundwater recharge through ponds and lakes are some of the proposed strategies. Read more

Resilient Cities 2016: 7th Annual Global Forum on Urban Resilience and Adaptation
Resilient Cities 2016 will take place from 6-8 July at Bonn, Germany.This Forum expected to bring together over 400 experts and practitioners and will focus on urban resilience and climate change adaptation, including inclusive resilience strategies, financing, adaptation planning and resilient infrastructure.
