From 2015 to 2021, the Building with Nature Indonesia initiative was implemented by Wetlands International and Ecoshape along 20 km of coastline in Demak Regency, Central Java. The project combined mangrove restoration with eco-engineering and sustainable land use to address severe erosion and flooding caused by aquaculture, groundwater extraction, and infrastructure development. It successfully reduced coastal risk while supporting long-term, sustainable livelihoods for local communities.
