Drakenstein municipality in South Africa faces heightened flood risk driven by climate change and ecosystem degradation. In response, the Hybrid Flood Alleviation project aims to restore 214 hectares of rivers, wetlands, and floodplains using nature-based infrastructure (NBI). Interventions include erosion control, wetland construction, and open space creation. Using the SAVi methodology, the project’s economic, environmental, and social benefits were assessed across four climate scenarios. Results show net benefits up to ZAR 597.3 million, with a benefit-cost ratio as high as 4.95. NBI offers co-benefits like job creation, food provision, and recreation, demonstrating strong potential for climate-resilient development.
