Rethinking trade-offs in Nature-based Solutions from a multispecies justice perspective

Abstract

This article explores how Nature-based Solutions (NbS) often involve complex trade-offs that can create or exacerbate social and ecological injustices— especially when justice considerations are limited to human interests. It introduces a multispecies justice lens, expanding the scope of who and what deserves ethical consideration in NbS planning. By challenging assumptions around instrumentality, neutrality, consensus, and time, the authors argue for more reflexive, inclusive, and ecologically grounded decision-making.
