Quantifying and Valuing Forests as a Nature-based Solution for Ecosystem-Based Disaster Risk Reduction: A Systematic Review

Abstract

Forests are increasingly recognized as nature-based solutions for disaster risk reduction, yet their protective effects remain under-quantified. This systematic review analyzes 77 studies with 155 data points to assess how forests are valued for mitigating gravitational and hydroclimatic hazards. It categorizes methodologies into hazard-based, risk-based, and economic valuation approaches, and highlights wide variation in reported monetary benefits. The review proposes a conceptual framework to guide future research and strengthen the integration of forests into DRR and climate adaptation strategies.
