A new way to understand flood risk
A team of researchers from the World Agroforestry Centre and Wageningen University have developed a new ‘flow persistence’ metric, which could estimate rainfall, catchment health and consequently, the likelihood of flooding. The new method could make it easier to predict river flows and potential flooding, when trees are put back into large-scale, deforested landscapes, contributing to ecosystem restoration. Implementing Green Infrastructure
The concept of ‘Green infrastructure’ is increasingly recognized globally. However, urban development often takes another direction towards concrete, ‘gray’ infrastructure. How cities adopt the GI approach is now being brought to the attention of city planners and governors. This paper argues for a diversified approach to the concept of GI, in order to facilitate its implementation in urban planning and management. Check out the full article here.
Growing Food with Green Infrastructure
Green infrastructure does not only help manage storm water in urban environments, but it also improves local resilience by providing locally-grown food to the community. Rooftops, walls, rain gardens could all be made into possible areas for farming. Check out the full article here.
FAST Webinar open for registration
The Foreshore Assessment using Space Technology project (FAST) is developing down-stream online open data mapping services for the European Earth Observation Programme Copernicus to support nature-based shoreline protection against flooding and erosion. The project generates high resolution maps and calculations for all coasts of the world using the latest satellite imagery. The FAST project will present developed tools, data and services in a webinar on the 20th of July, 16:00 – 18:00 CEST. Register here to reserve your webinar seat.
