Why Smart Cities are turning themselves into sponges
Rushing stormwater could be a big threat to the cities in the U.S., where treatment plants underground often fail to handle the unpredictable large amount of water influx. The traditional remedy, building underground tunnels or sinks, to capture the excessive water was a common yet costly one. Recently, engineers have discovered the greener and cheaper way to deal with stormwater problem – by making use of natural infrastructure. They built a constructed stormwater wetland that is modelled on a naturally occurring wetland. Check out their approach here.
Can Seaweed Farming Play a Role in Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation?
Researchers suggest that seaweed aquaculture may offer opportunities to mitigate and adapt to climate change. Their studies found that seaweed could help reduce the carbon emissions from agriculture by improving soil quality substituting synthetic fertilizer and lowering methane emissions from cattle. Seaweed farming can also improve coastal resilience by damping wave energy and protecting shorelines. Check out more details on how seaweed farming could be beneficial here.

Harvesting the Value of Water: Stormwater, Green infrastructure, and Real Estate

Although green infrastructure has been proven highly beneficial for disaster risk management, its benefits to real estate were not well discussed. The Urban Land Institute has released a report titled ‘Harvesting the Value of Water: Stormwater, Green infrastructure, and Real Estate’. It found that sustainable stormwater management infrastructures can provide health benefits for building users as well as benefits for the general building environment. Check out the full report here.
