New Declaration on Nature Based Solutions signed at COP23

In November 2017 at the UNFCCC COP23 in Bonn, Germany, the International Declaration on Nature-Based Solutions for Water Management Under Climate Change was signed by 33 alliances representing governments, international and national organizations, river basin organizations, local authorities, civil society, companies and research organizations. The Declaration highlights the possibilities for combining nature-based solutions with civil engineering approaches.

Signatories to the Declaration commit to including nature-based solutions in their long-term strategies and policies on climate change, risk reduction, land planning, and soil and water management. For more information on the Declaration, visit this webpage from PEDRR Partner the International Institute for Sustainable Development.
New report on climate change funding support for adaptation
A new Working Paper considers the question of how climate change funding can be effectively channelled to support adaptation, including ecosystem-based adaptation initiatives. Using case studies from Isiolo County, Kenya, it compares the strengths and weaknesses between a locally and a nationally managed fund to support development and climate change initiatives. New guidance from the World Bank on implementing nature-based flood protection
Acknowledging the increasing attention on using nature-based measures for their ability to address flood risk, the World Bank and partners have released a new guideline document on ‘Implementing nature-based flood protection: Principles and implementation guidance’. The document is a step towards standardized guidelines for all nature-based solutions. Read the report here.
Restoring floodplains and wetlands offer value-for-money solution to river flooding
A recently published European Environment Agency report assesses green options available in building climate resilience to increased risk posed by river flooding. The report – Green Infrastructure and Flood Management – outlines six case studies from four European river systems to explore the opportunities and challenges of a greener approach to flood defences. Scientific Corner
Higher plant species richness may not be enough to protect ecosystems from the worst impacts of climate extremes
Higher plant species richness is not always sufficient to reduce ecosystem vulnerability to climate extremes, as shown in a comprehensive literature analysis published recently in the Journal of Ecology. Researchers from Europe looked into scientific literature that addresses global changes to examine the interactions between biodiversity and extreme weather events. Read the report here.
