New MOOC - A Resilient Future: Science and Technology for Disaster Risk Reduction
This online course starting from 5 November 2016 aims to introduce participants to existing and emerging technologies suitable for disaster risk reduction while promoting the overall aim of sustainable development. Developed by École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, the course focuses on three main natural hazards: floods, landslides, and earthquakes. It also discusses the challenges and limits of adapting and adopting technologies depending on context (Global North and Global South) with examples from Switzerland, Nepal, Colombia, Philippines and other countries. For details

Online Flood Forecasting Tool to Save Lives in Mali

Due to high rainfall and already high groundwater levels, Mali's Inner Niger Delta is expected to experience its highest level of flooding in 50 years in the coming months of November - December. To help people adapt to the shifts of changing climate, Wetlands International, and the Malian government launched an online flood forecasting tool, known by its French acronym OPIDIN. It can be used for early warning and to predict water-level subsidence. Based on daily water level measurements and satellite-derived rainfall estimates for the Upper Niger, OPIDIN predicts the water level and timing of the flood peak and the maximum extent of the floods in the delta. World Mountain Forum 2016

Organised in Mbale, Uganda from 17-20 October, this conference will focus on sustainable mountain development through multiple themes like mountains and climate change, and mountain ecosystem services. This forum will give special emphasis on hazards and vulnerabilities related to mountain ecosystems. It aims to bring together government representatives, development actors, researchers, representatives of mountain communities and political actors in mountain areas at national and global levels. There is limited funding/sponsorship for especially active contributors and participants from developing countries. Read more


Integrated Landscape Management and the SDGs | Landscapes for People, Food, and Nature
Integrated landscape management (ILM) is an approach that breaks down sectoral barriers, capitalizes on synergies in land uses and human development, and strengthens coordination and participation of a wide range of stakeholders. This video demonstrates how ILM can be used to achieve the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which includes 17 sustainable development goals (SDGs) with 169 targets. Watch the video

Solomon Islands recognise benefits of healthy natural ecosystems for sustainable development
A 2-day mapping workshop on  natural ecosystems, resilience and vulnerability was organized in August by the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) with community and national representatives from organizations in Honiara, Solomon Islands. The workshop is a part of  a project called Ecosystem Resilience, Analysis and Mapping (ESRAM) for Solomon Islands to be completed by December 2016. The study addresses social-economic resilience to climate change associated with goods and services provided by ecosystems. Read more
