International Science-Policy Workshop: Innovating Engineering and Ecosystem-based Approaches for Disaster Risk Reduction

PEDRR will be holding a workshop on Innovating Engineering and Ecosystem-based Approaches for Disaster Risk Reduction at the United Nations University in Bonn, Germany from 14-16 June 2016. The goal of the workshop is to accelerate and scale-up implementation of ecosystem-based approaches to disaster risk reduction and adaptation (Eco-DRR/CCA) in the engineering community. It will discuss developing ecological engineering standards for DRR and promoting uptake of ecological engineering in development policies and planning and in the private sector. More information.

Biodiversity underpins ecosystem services
Ecosystems provide multiple benefits to humanity, from food, clean water and flood protection to cultural heritage and a sense of place, to name but a few. However, these ‘ecosystem services’ are under severe threat. Decision makers need clear information on how biodiversity underpins ecosystem services, the demand for these services, and the pressures impairing ecosystem capacity to provide such services. Cost and Benefits of Ecosystem-Based Adaptation (EbA)
This IUCN study, which was carried out with the financial support of the French Government, reviewed projects and assessed existing data from two sites in the Philippines. It highlights that undertaking economic costs and benefits of EbA options is important for decision- and policy-making purposes. In many cases, nature-based solutions provide more economic benefits than engineering solutions in the long run, especially when co-benefits are considered. Read the Report.

HORIZON 2020: Integrated tools for response planning and scenario building
At present, the wide range of sectors, disciplines and actors involved in disaster risk management are not sufficiently interlinked, which prevents efficient response planning. The project, with a budget of €8 million, will set up integrated tools for planning, preparation and intervention in disaster risks. Deadline for applications is 25 August. More information.
