2017 Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction
The United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR) has announced that registration for the fifth Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction (22-26 May 2017, Cancun, Mexico) is now open. The 2017 Global Platform will mark the first opportunity for the international community to review global progress on the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, which was adopted in Japan in 2015. Mitigating Droughts and Floods in Agriculture
This OECD report proposes a comprehensive analysis and a set of key recommendations on policy approaches to the sustainable management of droughts and floods in agriculture. It builds on recent trends, experiences and research from OECD countries, in particular Australia, Canada, France, Spain and the United Kingdom. The report promotes Eco-DRR measures in policy formulations to recognize agricultural ecosystems as effective means for flood management and water retention areas.  Read the full publication

Nature as storm defender
Research at the Northeastern University’s Marine Science Center along the North Carolina coast in the aftermath of Hurricane Irene in 2011 suggests that the use of “living shorelines” instead of seawalls can both better protect against erosion, and preserve vital ocean habitats. Researchers argue that seawall failure, which has been repeatedly observed, poses a threat to the delicate ecosystems associated with wetlands and intertidal areas by eroding the shoreline and erasing important habitats. UNEP Haiti - Fisheries and Eco-DRR
In 2013-2016, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the European Commission (EC) implemented a pilot demonstration project on Eco-DRR in Haiti. This video features some of the measures by UNEP and partner organizations to support more sustainable and resilient fishing in the south of Haiti. Activities included training the fishers in first aid, search and rescue, as well as boat repair to improve access to offshore waters and reduce pressure on fragile near shore ecosystems. To watch the video click here
Training Course
Mangrove Biodiversity and Ecosystems
On the occasion of the International Mangrove Day (26 July 2016), the UN University Institute for Water, Environment and Health (UNU-INWEH) and The Nature Conservancy (TNC)  announced the launch of a unique 10-unit online course on Mangrove Biodiversity and Ecosystems. This curriculum was built to bring awareness of the importance of mangroves to healthy ecosystems and human communities. The open-access post-graduate Mangroves Course is designed to build expertise in mangrove biology, ecology, assessment, management, and restoration and is aimed at young academics, professionals, managers, and any other interested individuals, especially from developing countries.
