Seychelles’ ecosystem-based adaptation for climate change project
integrates forest, rivers, and people
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Global Environment Fund (GEF) are implementing a project in the Seychelles, targeting five rivers in Mahe and Praslin islands. The project works with local communities to manage their rivers and wetlands and reduce drought and flood risks. Read More

Private sector involvement in ecosystem-based solutions 
Under Europe`s Horizon 2020 Initiative, Nature Grass, a private company from France, has developed AirFibr, which resembles natural grass and promotes optimum drainage. The new product helps manage excess storm waters and recharges groundwater. There is significant potential for applications in urban environments, for instance its use in playgrounds and stadiums across Europe. Read more
Featured Publication
This publication features experiences on post-disaster recovery and reconstruction from six countries with a focus on green and disaster resilient infrastructure. Japan’s experience illustrates how land-use planning in cities is taking into account the role of green parks as a strategy for building disaster resilience after the East Japan Tsunami 2011. Christchurch, New Zealand, has established a hierarchy of green spaces included in the city development plan to promote a greener and resilient city. Upcoming Training
 International Training Course on Disaster Risk Management of Cultural Heritage 2016 
To be held in Kobe,Kyoto and Sasayama Japan, from 10-26 September, this training organised by the Institute of Disaster Mitigation for Urban Cultural Heritage, Ritsumeikan University, will focus on protecting cultural heritage from disaster risks induced by climate change. It will cover risk assessment, recovery, preparedness, adaptation and management of cultural sites to support risk management of cultural heritage. For details
Online-Certificate Course in Disaster Management
Commencing on 26 September, this is an on-line Certificate Course on Disaster Management. The course comprises an online tutorial, a completion exam and an internship in the candidate's home country. This course is jointly organised by the International Federation of Red Cross and Crescent Societies (IFRC) and the Tata Institute for Social Sciences (TISS) and will take 12 months to complete. For details

Natural Heritage Sites and Disaster Risk Reduction 

A workshop entitled 'Natural Heritage Sites and their Role in Ecosystem Services Provisioning, DRR and Climate Change Adaptation in the Asia-Pacific Region' was successfully conducted on 3 June at Hanyang University, Republic of Korea by UNESCO for Category 2 Centres on Natural World Heritage Site Management and Training for the Asia-Pacific Region. Community-Based Ecological Mangrove Restoration
IUCN has led a mangrove restoration project in two coastal sites in Thailand, demonstrating positive results in reducing disaster risks from tropical storms and providing local communities with other benefits, such as fire wood, fish habitats and building material. The success of the project has set the foundation for scaling up the mangrove initiative for ecosystem-based DRR and adaptation.Watch the video
